Cienfuegos, capital of the province with the same name, was designed in its definitive layout by French colonists in 1819. Located on the south coast Cuba, the region surrounding the city is one of the most picturesque and fertile in Cuba.Cienfuegos is a small city approximately one hour from Trinidad, so makes an ideal stop on your journey between Havana and Trinidad. The city has plenty of Cuban charm and character so easily warrants a stay.
In the centre of the city is Parque Jose Marti, here you will find locals relaxing and chatting under the shade of a tree. Surrounding the park are a variety of buildings of interest including the Teatro Tomas Terry.
In the evening there is a choice of venues to listen to Cuban music and eat traditional Cuban food.
If you would like to stay in the centre of Cienfuegos we would recommend Hotel La Union. It is a lovely character hotel with spacious guest rooms and an inviting outdoor swimming pool. Along the bay, just outside of the town centre is a beautiful old Moorish style palace called Palacio de Valle. This building is well worth a visit to see the stunning architecture or you may want to stop and enjoy a meal in the restaurant.
